Summary:

The Home Fuel Driver Position Responsible for delivering home heating oil and various products to residences and commercial properties on public roads or highways, from various locations to the customer(s).  Must observe state and city speed and safety regulations, as well as company customer service and safety policies.  Must provide excellent customer service and while making timely deliveries.  Must possess or be able to complete requirements for a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with hazmat and doubles/triples endorsement.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Drives truck to destination, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observing all traffic law and safety regulations.
  • Inspects truck for defects before and after trips and reports any discrepancies indicating truck condition to the dispatcher or shop foreman.
  • Loads petroleum product at terminal and unloads at assigned station facilities
  • Must be able to back tankers in and out of service bays in the shop and around customer property.
  • Maneuvers trailers in and around tight corners, through manufacturing areas and around high pedestrian traffic.
  • Stick tanks prior to, and after, delivery of fuel.
  • Remain outside by hoses while taking on fuel or making delivery.
  • Maintain truck log, according to state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain telephone or radio contact with dispatcher to receive delivery instructions.
  • May perform emergency roadside repairs and install tire chains.
  • May drive tractor with two trailers hitched in tandem.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by dispatchers.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to drop and spot trailers on varied terrains.
  • Requires high degree of attention and considerable dexterity in the control of tractor-trailer and in preventing damage to materials and tractor-trailer equipment.
  • Must be able to back trailers in and out of receiving docks as well as service bays in the shop.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Tact and diplomacy required in dealing with customer personnel at delivery points.
  • Must pass substance abuse screening (as a safety sensitive employee subject to random substance abuse screening under company policy)
  • Must have the ability to work independently; pay attention to minute details; be organized with ability to prioritize and complete tasks; bring energy to the position and be internally inspired using his or her initiative; be punctual and dependable.
  • Ability to successfully complete a company logbook and demonstrate basic math skills.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Driver is 23 years or older — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (1)
  • Read and speak English sufficiently to converse with general public and comprehend DOT and OSHA regulations — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (2)
  • No serious moving violation (excessive speeding over 15 mph) or DUI in the previous 5 years
  • Tanker/chemical experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

  • Valid Alaska Class A CDL with Hazmat endorsement (X)
  • Valid medical card — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (4)

Preferred:

  • Three plus year winter driving experience in a tractor trailer
  • Doubles/triples (T) endorsement / Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) Certification
  • TWIC Card

The performance of this position requires exposure to the out-of-doors (sometimes in extreme weather conditions) and shop areas, where certain areas require the use of personal protective equipment such as a reflective vest, steel-toed boots, safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.

 

Physical Demands: Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. May require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required throughout the workday. Proper lifting techniques required.
